ITASCA, ILL. — The stroke play qualifying rounds of the 35th Chick Evans Junior Amateur at Itasca Country Club came to a close Tuesday afternoon. The annual state junior match play event held by the Illinois Junior Golf Association featured 192 juniors ages 12-18. Kyle Slattery of Rockford claimed medalist honors in the Boys Division while Margaret Hickey of Glencoe medaled in the Girls Division.
Slattery’s second round 68 propelled him to a two-day total of 7-under-par 137. His scorecard featured six birdies including two sets of back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2, 3 and Nos. 8, 9. Slattery will receive the one seed for the match play portion of the event. Clinching the second seed was Andrew Huber of Winnetka. Huber finished one stroke behind Slattery, with a two-day total of 6-under-par 138. 32 players made it to the match play bracket.
Hickey’s rounds of 76-75 led her to the number one seed in the Girls Division match play bracket. During her second round she recorded birdies on Nos. 15 and 18. Nina Rutkowski of Park Ridge claimed the second seed after firing rounds of 74-78, good enough to put her one stroke ahead of Wataga’s Taylor Nesselroad. Nesselroad will be the third seed in match play. 16 players made it to the match play bracket.
Live scoring will be available for the duration of the event. The Boys Division will compete in two rounds of match play Wednesday and Thursday. The championship match will be held Friday morning to determine the boys champion of the Chick Evans Junior Amateur. The Girls Division will also compete in two rounds of match play Wednesday with the semi-final and final rounds held Thursday.
Matches will commence at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning at Itasca Country Club.
