BLOOMINGTON, ILL.- After a onehour rain delay this morning, good weather finally found the course for the final round of The Championship at Illinois State University for the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour. Michael Mounce (2015) of El Paso, Ill., led wire-to-wire for the Boys Division, winning and shooting a total of 207. In the Girls Division, Roshannah Gaur (2018) of Hinsdale, Ill., carded a three-day total of 226. In the College Men Division, Nate Esler of St. Charles, Ill., carded a tournament total of 225 to take the championship, and Angie Kim of Schaumburg, Ill., took the lead title after shooting a three-day total of 235 for the College Women Division.
“It’s great to once again to have our tournament here at the Weibring course,” said senior director Stephanie Schwartz. “Though we had some worries with the weather during the final round of play, it was great to see our players compete in this three day tournament.”
The 2015 MAJGT Championship at Illinois State University was a 54-hole stroke play competition featuring 92 junior golfers and college level golfers representing Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida and Iowa. This tournament featured the par-71 Weibring Golf Course. Due to weather and course condition, the final round was played as a par-70. The Boys Division played from 6,769 yards and the Girls Division played from 5,858 yards. The College Men Division played from 6,916 yards while the College Women Division played from 6,045 yards.
The MAJGT is designed for exceptionally talented junior and college level golfers throughout the Midwest and is nationally recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and the American Junior Golf Association with all of its events providing national exposure.
Mounce held onto the title after carding 13 birdies and an eagle throughout three rounds. In second place for the Boys Division was David Perkins (2016) of East Peoria, Ill., shooting a tournament total of 212 and in third place was Benjamin Johnson (2015) of Downers Grove, Ill., with a three-day total of 217.
Gaur stepped up her game in the final round and made a total of six birdies during the week for the win. In second place for the Girls Division was Grace Dunn (2015) of Brookfield, Wis., who shot a three-day total of 230. There was a two way tie for third place between Annalee Dannegger (2017) of Wheaton, Ill., and Amy Hong (2016) of Northbrook, Ill., with tournament totals of 241.
After trailing behind his competitors in the first two rounds, Esler took the lead in his division after firing a 2-under-par 68 during the final round to take home first place in the College Men Division, Adam Baracani of Normal, Ill., carded a tournament total of 230 and placed second in the division. Trace Moustakas of Palos Heights, Ill., took third place after shooting a tournament total of 233.
Kim played consistently throughout the first two rounds and was awarded the College Women Division champion trophy. In second place, Kiley Walsh of Mount Prospect, Ill., shot a three-day total of 238 and in third place was Jennifer Kim of Palatine, Ill., carding a tournament total of 249.
The MAJGT’s next event is scheduled for August 4-6 at the Championship at the Den in Bloomington, Ill.
