WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Mid-American Junior Golf Tour’s Purdue Classic came to a close Friday after two blistering days of golf. In the Boys Division, Dylan Panizo (2017) of Normal, Ill., defeated Bryan Stogsdill (2017) of Naperville, Ill., in a sudden death playoff to take home champion honors. In the Girls Division, Lauren Nay (2018) of Naperville, Ill., took top honors after a three hole playoff, while in the College Division, MeKenzie Hilsmeyer of Jasper, Ind., finished atop the leaderboard.
The Purdue Classic is a 36-hole, stroke play event contested on the Kampen Course at Purdue University. The field was made up of 57 junior and college golfers from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The Boys Division played the par 72 course from 6,724 yards, the Girls Division played the course from 5,873 yards and the College Division played from 6,251 yards.
The MAJGT is designed for exceptionally talented junior golfers throughout the Midwest ages 12-18 and is nationally recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and American Junior Golf Association with all of its events providing national exposure.
In the Boys Division, Panizo and Stogsdill each carded a 9-over-par 153 tournament total forcing a sudden death playoff which was decided on the first hole. This is Panizo’s first MAJGT victory.
Coming in third was Tyler Roat (2018) of Lockport, Ill., who carded a tournament total of 10-over-par 154. In a tied for fourth was Raymond Sullivan (2018) of Lemont, Ill., and Tyler White (2017) of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., who each carded tournament total of a 12-over-par 156.
In the Girls Division, Nay finished the two rounds tied with Mackenzie Hahn (2017) of Spring Grove, Ill., with a two day total of 11-over-par 155, which forced a sudden death playoff. After pars on the first two playoff holes, Nay birdied the third playoff hole to end the playoff. This is Nay’s first MAJGT victory, her best finish coming earlier this year at the Bolingbrook Open where she came in sixth.
Rounding out the top-3 was Stephanie Mroz (2018) of Wood Dale, Ill., who finished with a tournament total of 13-over-par 157.
In the College Division, Hilsmeyer, who plays collegiate golf for Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis, carded one birdie and 13 pars en route to her 12-over-par 156 tournament total. Coming in runner-up was Frankie Saban of Orland Park, Ill., who carded a tournament total of 15-over-par 159. Rounding out the top-3 was Erin Ingram of Richmond, Ind., who finished the two days with a total of 17-over-par 161.
The MAJGT heads to Galena, Ill., next week for the Classic at Eagle Ridge.
