YORKVILLE, Ill. – The Mid-American Junior Golf Tour’s Whitetail Ridge Open concluded Sunday after two days of competitive golf. In the Boys Division, Marcus Smith (2020) of Rockford, Ill., finished atop the leaderboard after carding a 5-under-par 137 tournament total. In the Girls Division, Molly Lyne (2020) of Cary, Ill., carded a tournament total of 1-under-par 106 to finish one stroke better than the second place finisher.
The MAJGT Whitetail Ridge Open was a 36-hole tournament for the Boys Division and the weather conditions forced the Girls Division to be shortened to 27 holes. The field featured junior golfers ages 12-18 from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The Boys Division played the par 71 Whitetail Ridge GC from 6,561 yards, while the Girls Division will play from 6,019 yards.
The MAJGT is designed for exceptionally talented junior golfers throughout the Midwest ages 12-18 and is nationally recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and American Junior Golf Association with all of its events providing national exposure.
Smith carded rounds of 2-under-par 69 and a final round of 3-under-par 68 to bring his tournament total to 5-under-par 137. His final round included four birdies and only one bogey. This is Smith’s first MAJGT victory.
Coming in tie for second were Tyler Bussert (2018) of Port Byron, Ill., and Jimmy Morton (2018) of Sugar Grove, Ill., who each carded tournament totals of 4-under-par 138. In fourth was Josh Zoldan (2018) of Highland Park, Ill., who finished the tournament with a 2-under-par 140 total. Rounding out the top five were Ryan Cagan (2018) of Naperville, Ill., and Parker Wisdom (2019) of Bloomington, Ill., who each finished the tournament at 1-over-par 143.
In the Girls Division, Lyne carded a 2-under-par 69 to move her tournament total to 1-under-par 106. Lyne’s final round included six birdies, three of which came on Nos. 5, 6 and 7. This is her first MAJGT victory, her best finish prior came in 2017 at the Kenosha Classic where she finished third.
Coming in runner-up was Jo Baranczyk (2021) of Suamico, Wis., who finished the tournament at even-par 107. Rounding out the top three was Kira Wolf (2020) of Matton, Ill., who carded a 6-over-par 113 tournament total.
The MAJGT returns in June for the Donald Ross Classic at Ravisloe CC in Homewood, Ill., on June 6-7.
