DEERFIELD, Ill.— Players from three divisions competed in the two-round Summer Junior Elite at Deerfield Golf Club on July 10-11. Duke McGinn (74-69–143) from Wilmette won the Boys 12-15 division, Nicha Chaosaowapa (72-74–146) of Chicago took first for the Girls 12-15 division, and Saint Charles’s Euan Tiner (74-79–153) won the Boys 10-11 division.

 

THE TOURNAMENT:

  • The Summer Junior Elite at Glenview Park is a 36-hole stroke play event spanning two days. The contest is for juniors ages 10-15. 
  • Par for the course was 72. For the boys aged 12-15 the course played 5,930 yards. For the girls aged 12-15 and the boys aged 10-11, the course played 5,005 yards.

 

THE BOYS 12-15 LEADERBOARD:

  • McGinn was the only player to finish under par, putting up a 36-hole score of one under. He went two over in round one before firing off a 69, or three under par, in round two.
  • Park Ridge resident Johnny Santucci (72-73–145) finished in second place with a two-round score of one over par. He was consistent, shooting par in round one and one over par in round two.
  • William Hare (74-72–146) of La Grange shot two over par in round one and par in round two. His final score came to two over par.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • McGinn made 10 birdies through 36 holes, six of which occurred during the second round. Constantine Verros made six total birdies.
  • Hare and Michalak Griffin each made a par on 26 of the 36 holes.
  • Gage Jacobs was the only player to make a birdie on three straight holes. He birdied holes 13, 14, and 15 during round two.
  • Michalak and Patrick McDermott each went 12 straight holes bogey-free.

 

THE GIRLS’ LEADERBOARD:

  • Chaosaowapa won by eight strokes, shooting par in round one and two over par in round two. Her winning score was two over par.
  • Lauren Gauss (75-79–154) of Plainfield won second place with a two-round score of 10 over par. She shot three over par in round one and seven over par in round two.
  • Hailing from Libertyville, Kenzie Christie (81-76–157) rounded out the top three with a 36-hole score of 13 over par. She shot nine over in round one and four over in round two.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Chaosaowapa, Lauren Jeon, and Olivia Yoon each put up five birdies through two rounds. Madison Cotey and Lauren Gauss each made four birdies.
  • Sophia Chen made 25 pars over the course of 36 holes.
  • Lauren Jeon made three birdies in a row on holes 14, 15, and 16 during round one.
  • Christie went eight straight holes bogey-free. Chaosaowapa and Chen each went seven straight holes bogey-free.

 

THE BOYS (10-11) LEADERBOARD:

  • Tiner’s 36-hole score of nine over par consisted of rounds of two over par in round one and seven over par in round two.
  • John Haas (81-73–154) of Lake Forest took second place after lowering his round score from nine over par on day one to one over par on day two. He finished at 10 over par.
  • Luca Marinescu (75-79–154) finished in third place with rounds of six over and nine over. The Deerfield resident posted a 36-hole score of 15 over par.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Carter Lang made six total birdies through two rounds. Tiner had five total birdies and Haas had four.
  • Marinescu made par on 21 of the 36 holes. Haas made 20 pars and Tiner and Chase Perez each had 19.
  • Lang and Tiner each made back-to-back birdies during round one.
  • Tiner opened up the tournament with eight bogey-free holes.
