ITASCA, Ill.— 99 boys and 48 girls competed in the 44th Chick Evans Junior Amateur tournament at Itasca Country Club on July 15-19. Amelia Tan of Hinsdale won the girls’ division and Drew Schauenberg of Barrington won the boys’ division after two rounds of stroke play and a match play bracket.

 

THE TOURNAMENT:

  • The Chick Evans Junior Amateur (CEJA) is a five day event featuring stroke and match play. Days one and two feature two rounds of stroke play. At the completion of stroke play, the field is cut to the top 16 girls’ finishers and the top 32 boys’ finishers. These players are seeded into a bracket and compete in matches until one winner remains. 
  • Par for the course was 72. The boys played the course 6,813 yards and the girls played the course 5,790 yards.

 

THE BOYS’ CHAMPION:

  • Schauenberg (74-74–148) went two over in each round of stroke play. This sent him to a playoff to make the cut, where he ended up earning the 28 seed out of 32.
  • Schauenberg defeated the 5 seed in round one in 19 holes. He made a birdie on the extra hole to secure his spot in the round of 16.
  • Schauenberg took down the 12 seed in round two, five up with four holes left to play. The match ended on hole 14 with a par from Schauenberg.
  • Schauenberg went three up on the 17th hole with a par during the quarter-finals, ending the match and knocking out the 29 seed.
  • Schauenbeg took down the top seed in the bracket during the semifinals on hole 15. With three holes left unplayed, he made a birdie to go up five and end the match.
  • Schauenberg took down runner-up Owen Coniaris during the final round, going up four on hole 13 and maintaining the four hole lead through hole 15, where he finished out his victory run with a par. 

 

THE GIRLS’ CHAMPION:

  • Tan (77-74–151) shot seven over through two rounds of stroke play with a score of five over in round one and two over in round two. She made it into the bracket as the 11 seed out of 16.
  • During the first round, Tan took down the 6 seed after making a five on the 18th hole to finish two up.
  • Tan played the 3 seed during the quarter-finals, where she birdied the first hole to take an early lead. She went two up on hole 11 and maintained the lead through hole 17, where she won the match by tying the hole with a par.
  • During the semi-finals, Tan managed a par on hole 16 to go three up with only two holes left. This ended her match against the 7 seed and punched her ticket to the championship.
  • Facing the number 4 seed, Tan went up by three with a birdie on hole 10 before losing the lead and going down by one hole on number 15. After winning the next hole to tie the match, Tan parred the final two holes to go one up and win on the 18th green.
