LEMONT, Ill.— 65 boys and 21 girls competed in the two-round MAJGT tournament at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club on July 31- August 1. Jack Bice (71-63–134) won the boys’ division with a 36-hole score of ten under par and Mayan Covarrubias (69-74–143) from North Riverside won the girls’ division with a two-round score of one under par.

 

THE TOURNAMENT:

  • MAJGT at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club is a 36-hole stroke play event spanning two days. The contest is for juniors ages 12-18 and the format for the event was a shotgun start for each round.
  • Par for the course was 72. The boys played the course 6,723 yards and the girls played the course 5,707 yards.

 

THE BOYS’ LEADERBOARD:

  • After going one under par in round one, Bice put up a clean scorecard in round two and made nine pars and nine birdies for a round score of nine under par. Bice finished at ten under, winning by six strokes.
  • Jake Forrest (68-72–140) of Western Springs took second place with a 36-hole score of four under par. He went four under in round one and shot par in round two.
  • LaGrange native Finley Tyrrell (71-70–141) posted a two-round score of three under par and won the scorecard playoff for third place. He went one under in round one and two under in round two, where he made six birdies on the back nine.
  • Brandon Burggraf (71-70–141) of Geneva also finished with a two-round score of three under par with rounds of one under and two under. He took fourth place overall.
  • Robert Politza (71-70–141) rounded out the top five, finishing the tournament at three under par as well. He also went one under in round one and two under in round two.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nick Ratini made two eagles during the second round on par fives hole number four and hole number 13. Luke Walker eagled the other two par fives, holes number six and 15, during round one.
  • Bice totaled 14 pars through 36 holes. Forrest, Politza, Ratini, and Jack Van Laningham each had nine birdies.
  • Fitzpatrick Knight and Ethan Noellsch each made 27 pars through 36 holes. Graeme Cavanagh and Jack Zeiger each made 26 pars.
  • Robert Felicione made four back-to-back birdies from holes three through six during round two. Walker made four straight birdies from holes four through seven during round two.
  • Bice went the entirety of round two without a bogey. Tyrrell went 16 straight holes bogey-free and Grant Hickman and Owen Moskovitz went 15 straight holes without a bogey.

 

THE GIRLS’ LEADERBOARD:

  • Covarrubias went three under in round one with a clean back nine highlighted by four birdies. She went two over in round two to win by five strokes.
  • Taylor Miller (79-69–148) shot seven over in round one before firing off a score of three under in round two. She took second with a 36-hole score of four over.
  • Sarah Arsich (77-75–152) of Mokena nabbed the last podium spot, going five over in round one and three over in round two to finish the tournament at eight over.
  • Chicagoan Sophia Klapper (77-78–155) took fourth place with rounds of five over and six over par. Her two-round score came to 11 over par.
  • Sarah Scott (82-75–157) of Lemont went ten over on day one before improving by seven on day two to shoot three over. Her two-round score came to 13 over and earned her fifth place.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Taylor Miller eagled the par five hole number four in round two. She was the only player in the field to make an eagle.
  • Covarrubias led the field with nine total birdies. Arsich and Miller each made six birdies.
  • Lauren Gauss parred 24 of the 36 total holes. Scott made 23 pars and Josephine Zangrilli made 22.
  • Arsich made three straight birdies on holes 13, 14, and 15 during round one.
  • Covarrubias had a bogey-free streak lasting 10 holes. Arsich, Scott, and Amaani Patel each went nine straight holes without a bogey.
