HOMEWOOD, Ill.— 75 boys and 20 girls competed in the two-round MAJGT tournament at Ravisloe Country Club on June 19-20. Palatine’s Kasey May (68-71–139) won the boys’ division with a 36-hole score of one under par and Sophia Joeng (74-71–145) from Buffalo Grove made five second round birdies to win the girls’ division with a score of five over par.

 

THE TOURNAMENT:

  • MAJGT at Ravisloe Country Club is a 36-hole stroke play event spanning two days. The contest is for juniors ages 12-18. 
  • Par for the course was 70. The boys played the course 6,323 yards and the girls played the course 5,701 yards.

 

THE BOYS’ LEADERBOARD:

  • May went two under in round one and one over in round two, making himself the only player with a two-round score below par.
  • Robert Politza (71-69–140) of Lemont earned second place, posting the only negative score of the second round at one under. This combined with a round one score of one over for a 36-hole score of even.
  • Wheaton native Charlie Gilligan (70-71–141) took third place with scores of even and one over. His 36-hole score was one over par.
  • Greer Peters (69-72–141), a Moline resident, also finished with a two-round score of one over par. He took fourth place with scores of one under and two over.
  • Tyler Samaan (71-72–143) rounded out the top five, finishing the tournament at three over par. The Elgin native had rounds of one over and two over.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Quin Adams, Charlie Forrest, Jacob Gupta, William Herakovich, Liam Nelson, Charlie Nordby, and Luke Semyck all made an eagle during the tournament. Nelson’s eagle came on the par four hole number 16.
  • May led the field with nine birdies. Peters made eight total birdies and Gilligan and Rishi Kompala made seven each.
  • Politiza was the most consistent, making a par on 29 of the 36 holes. Johnny Santucci parred 27 of the 36 holes.
  • Robert Felicione and Peters each had three back-to-back birdies. For Felicione, they were on holes 13 to 15 in round one, and for Peters they were on the first three holes of round two.
  • Anthony Solare went 17 straight holes without a bogey from holes two through 18 in round one.

 

THE GIRLS’ LEADERBOARD:

  • Joeng went four over in round one before firing off a 71, or one over, in round two to overtake first place. Her two-round score was five over par.
  • Brooke Adams (71-75–146) from Orland Park took second place. She had rounds of one over and five over for a two-round score of six over par.
  • Keira Brazeau (73-80–153) of Palatine took home the third place trophy, posting rounds of three over and ten over. Her final score was plus 13.
  • Downers Grove resident Miah Wanserski (78-77–155) finished in fourth place after finishing 15 over par. Her round one score was eight over and her round two score was seven over.
  • Josephine Zangrilli (80-80–160) of Glenview rounded out the top five with back-to-back rounds of ten over par. Her 36-hole score came out to 20 over par.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amelia Van Vuren was the only player to make an eagle during the tournament. She made it on hole 13, a par five, during round one.
  • Sophia Joeng made seven birdies overall, five of which came in the second round.
  • Adams parred 27 of the 36 holes.
  • Joeng and Van Vuren each made back-to-back birdies during round two.
  • Adams went nine straight holes bogey-free. Brazeau and Joeng each had a seven hole no-bogey streak.

The MAJGT Girls’ Junior Amateur will take place on June 24-25 at Pine Meadow in Mundelein, Illinois. The MAJGT will return for both the boys and the girls at Klein Creek in Winfield, Illinois, on July 17-18.
