WINFIELD, Ill.— 66 boys and 21 girls competed in the two-round MAJGT tournament at Klein Creek Golf Club on July 17-18. Warrenville’s Michael Johansen (72-68–140) won the boys’ division with a 36-hole score of four under par and Sophia Joeng (78-72–150) from Buffalo Grove won the girls’ division with a two-round score of six over par.
THE TOURNAMENT:
- MAJGT at Klein Creek Golf Club is a 36-hole stroke play event spanning two days. The contest is for juniors ages 12-18.
- Par for the course was 72. The boys played the course 6,635 yards and the girls played the course 5,674 yards.
THE BOYS’ LEADERBOARD:
- Johansen finished even with par in round one and went four under in round two to finish four under.
- Tyler Short (71-70–141) of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin earned second place with rounds of one under and two under. His two-round score came to three under par.
- Chicago native Max Satterfield (74-69–143) took third place with scores of two over par and three under par. His 36-hole score was one under par.
- Ben Riekse (77-69–146), a Glenview resident, took fourth and finished with a 36-hole score of two over par. He went five over in round one before firing off a 69, or three under par, in round two.
- Jack Zeiger (76-70–146) rounded out the top five, finishing the tournament at two over par. The Chicago native had rounds of four over and two under.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Kyle Carlson, Blake Flessner, Peyton Kittivat, and William Walsh each made an eagle during the second round. For Kittivat and Carlson, the eagle came on the par five hole number 16. For Flessner, the eagle came on the par five hole number seven. For Walsh, the eagle came on the par four hole number 13.
- Johansen led the pack with nine birdies overall. Zeiger and Peter Conkey each made seven birdies.
- Ryan Kong and Tyler Short each parred 27 of the 36 holes.
- Satterfield made three straight birdies on holes 7, 8, and 9 during round two.
- Riekse and Short went 20 straight holes without a bogey.
THE GIRLS’ LEADERBOARD:
- Joeng went six over in round one before shooting a par during round two. She won by one stroke, finishing at six over par.
- Rylee Brockhouse (78-73–151) from Muscatine, Iowa, took second place. She had rounds of six over and one over for a two-round score of seven over par.
- Emiko Chichester (79-77–156) of Highland Park took home the third place trophy, posting rounds of seven over and five over. This gave her a two-round score of 12 over par.
- Frankfort resident Grace Zhang (77-79–156) also finished with a 36-hole score of 12 over par. She took fourth with scores of five over and seven over.
- Brianna Chamoun (79-78–157) of Sycamore rounded out the top five with an overall score of 13 over par. She went seven over in round one and six over in round two.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Joeng was the only player to make an eagle. She made a three on hole 16, a par five, during round one.
- Joeng had the most total birdies with six. Mina Shyam made five total birdies.
- Brockhouse and Anika Danda each made a par on 23 of the 36 holes.
- Joeng went 12 straight holes without making a bogey from hole three through hole 14 during round two.
